Cruel and Tender. Joe Dixon, Toby Fisher © Ruth Walz
Fascinated by Sophocles’ tragedy “The Trachiniae” about the ancient hero Heracles and his wife Deianeira, Luc Bondy encouraged the English playwright Martin Crimp to create a new play that transposes this material into an uncanny present. The wife, who waits at home full of hopes and fears for the heroic general (Joe Dixon) to return from his anti-terror mission, and to whom he is then unfaithful, is played by the renowned actress Kerry Fox (“An Angel at My Table”, “Intimacy”).
