Ferdinand Schmalz, born in Graz on 18.12.1985, lives in Vienna. Schmalz is a graduate of the FORUM Text course at uniT in Graz. He won the Retzhofer Dramapreis in 2013 for am beispiel der butter and was voted Most Promising Playwright of 2014 in Theater heute. His play dosenfleisch received its world premiere in June 2015, opening the Autor*innentheatertage at Deutsches Theater Berlin and was nominated for the Mülheim Drama Prize 2016. With an extract from his novel Mein Lieblingstier heißt Winter Schmalz won the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize 2017. He was also awarded the NESTROY Prize for his play jedermann (stirbt) at the Vienna Burgtheater. The novel Mein Lieblingstier heißt Winter was published by S. Fischer Verlage in 2022 and was both longlisted for the German Book Prize and shortlisted for the Austrian Book Prize. His most recent work, bumm tschak oder der letzte henker, premiered at the Bregenz Festival.
