La Monte Young

American composer La Monte Young was born in 1935 in rural Idaho. With a base in jazz, he conquered dodecaphony and experimental American avant-garde in the 1950s. Later, La Monte Young was a member of the Fluxus movement and studied Indian music. At the centre of his creative output lies the idea of the sustained tone, with complex sounds gradually unfolding over a long period of time in his sound installations and group improvisations. A further element of his work involves reflections on pure tuning. In the past years he has concentrated on his collaboration with the Just Alap Raga Ensemble.
