Dieter Schnebel

Freedom from dogmatic notions is an essential feature of Dieter Schnebel’s artistic personality (born in 1930). He began composing serial music in the 1950s in the spirit of the Darmstädter Schule. Suspicious of the closedness of the serial aesthetic, he arrived at experimental compositions that realise open working concepts and primarily find new paths in their focus on the human voice. Since the 1970s, the intensive focus on musical tradition has built up an important thread in his body of works. Schnebel has created a series of free, experimental works and has worked with genres such as the symphony and the mass. From 1976 to his retirement Dieter Schnebel was active at Berlin’s University of the Arts.
