director, dramaturg
Noémi Ola Berkowitz (she/they) is a Polish-American director and dramaturg. After studying Theatre (Acting) and Psychology at Stanford University, Berkowitz moved to Germany, assistant directing at the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin and the Münchner Kammerspiele while working as a freelance director, translator and performer. Later, Berkowitz studied at the Ernst Busch Academy for Dramatic Arts (MA Dramaturgy) with a guest semester in directing at the National Academy of Theatre Arts in Kraków. Selected works include the semi-autobiographical queer utopian play an imperfect utopia (co-production TR Warszawa – Teatr Rozmaitości and the Münchner Kammerspiele), which they directed and co-wrote, as well as a forthcoming radio play for Deutschlandfunk examining memory culture and intergenerational trauma. Berkowitz has also worked as a dramaturg at Schauspiel Dortmund and as a director in the development of Christopher Adams-Cohen’s play All the Beasts of the Earth. Berkowitz’s work uses an intersectional queer lens, humour and diverse, transnational ensembles to explore bold aesthetic visions that imagine alternative realms of possibilities.
