Chiyoko Szlavnics is a composer and visual artist living in Berlin. Her two artistic disciplines both inspire, and inform each other – drawings have often served as the basis for compositions, and aspects of sound have influenced several of her drawings series.
Chiyoko Szlavnics (born 1967 in Toronto), graduated from the University of Toronto in 1989, and studied composition with James Tenney from 1993–1997. She received a Fellowship Grant from the Akademie Schloss Solitude in 1997, and attended the composition seminars of Walter Zimmermann at the UdK after moving to Berlin in 1999-2000. She remained closely associated with the seminar afterwards, including presenting the students with analyses. Szlavnics’' music has been performed internationally by ensembles such as Ensemble Musikfabrik, Klangforum Wien, RSO Stuttgart (SWR), BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Janacek Philharmonic, Ostravska Banda, Quatour Bozzini, Assasello Quartet, Sonar Quartet, Wet Ink, yarn/wire, Ute Wassermann, Dirk Rothbrust, Marc Sabat, and members of Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop. Her drawings have appeared in numerous exhibitions both in Europe and Canada, most notably at Fruesorge Contemporary Drawings (Berlin) and the Centre For Recent Drawing (London) in 2012. Her portrait CD, "Gradients of Detail" was released on the World Edition label in 2013, and a new portrait CD is to be released in Winter 2016/17 by the UK label, Another Timbre.
