Born in 1930 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, unconventional opera works created for television have formed the core of Robert Ashley’s work since the 1970s. A special closeness to all theatrical also distinguishes many of his early works, in which settings, places or plots are invoked without being tangible. In doing so, Ashley takes advantage of the possibilities offered by electroacoustic music in innovative ways. Characteristic for Ashley’s compositions is the experimental use of language, his own, unmistakable voice contributing significantly to many of his pieces. Robert Ashley’s instrumental works are primarily graphically notated, according the interpreter improvisational freedoms.
