Sama Mousavi

playwright, actor, director

Sama Mousavi (PhD, born 1989) is a transnational theatre artist and researcher from the Iranian diaspora. As a director, performer, playwright and theatre educator, she works between Iran, Germany and Canada. In her work, she combines autobiographical and documentary forms to explore questions of memory, migration, and social realities. For her, theatre is both an artistic practice and a space for research.

Trained in acting and directing in Iran, she later studied Theatre in Social Context in Ottersberg (Germany) and completed her PhD in Theatre Pedagogy at the University of Hamburg. Many of her works in Iran focused on the lived realities and challenges faced by women in Iranian society.

Today she continues to develop her artistic practice from the perspective of the diaspora, creating performative forms in which personal stories meet collective experiences of exile, memory and identity.
