Moritz Eggert

Moritz Eggert was born in 1965 in Heidelberg. As a composer, he has always liked to work in all musical genres, which has unsettled both classical and avant-gardist audiences. His projects – such as “Die Tiefe des Raumes” (The Depth of Space, a ‘football oratorio’ written for the Ruhrtriennale commissioned by the World Cup 2006 cultural programme), or “Freax” (a joint opera with Christoph Schlingensief) – have been much debated in the media. In his work, he constantly attempts to undermine the prevailing image of New Music as a topic for expert audiences. Besides his focus on music theatre – Eggert has written 11 operas to date – he likes to cultivate nuances of chamber or experimental music, for example in his song cycle “Neue Dichter Lieben” or his piano cycle “Hämmerklavier”. Among his current projects are: a new large-scale opera for Linz and Berlin, a score of Google’s terms of use for vocals and orchestra, a “cook’s opera” for Hamburg and a symphony for car horns. He writes the Bad Blog of Musick for the “neue musikzeitung”, the most-read blog on contemporary music in Germany. He lives with his wife, the writer Andrea Heuser, son Milo and daughter Siri in Munich.
