Dresdner Sinfoniker
The Dresdner Sinfoniker are among the leading symphony orchestras for contemporary music. Founded in 1997 by Markus Rindt and Sven Helbig and composed of members of practically all of the most significant European orchestras, the ensemble is exclusively project oriented and creates connections between path-breaking trends in contemporary music. Among their repertoire are compositions by Steve Reich, John Adams, Gija Kantscheli, Awet Terterjan, Frank Zappa, John McLaughlin, Luis Andriessen and Tan Dun.
The Dresdner Sinfoniker attracted a great deal of international attention in 2003 with their song cycle “Mein Herz brennt” by Torsten Rasch, which was based on texts and music by German band Rammstein. They received the ECHO Klassik prize for their CD. In 2004 they recorded a soundtrack for Sergej Eisenstein’s silent film “Panzerkreuzer Potemkin” together with the Pet Shop Boys, produced the highly acclaimed “Hochhausinfonie” in Dresden in 2006 as the highlight of its 800-year city jubilee, and organised the “Erste Ferndirigat der Welt” (“The World’s First Long-Distance Conducting Session”) in 2008, in which conductor Michael Helmrath conducted the overture of the Dresden concert from the bank of the Thames in London.
