Rolf Julius

Rolf Julius (1939–2011) was a sound art pioneer. Having originally studied fine arts, Wilhelmshaven-born artist began to include music in his works in the mid-1070s, soon concentrating on sound installations that he also placed in public spaces. In his works, strongly reduced spatial settings constructed from only a few elements are enlivened by sounds. Following John Cage’s notion of “small sounds”, Rolf Julius frequently uses very quiet monochrome, as it were, transforming sounds that sensitize the listener’s/viewer’s perceptive abilities.
