Walter Zimmermann

Walter Zimmermann (born in 1949) is an unusually reflective composer, who was inspired by ancient philosophy as well as by French Structuralist thinkers. Their works are accompanied by extensive studies. He is, in addition, one of the best connoisseurs of American music and was especially influenced by John Cage and Morton Feldman. Characteristic to Zimmermann’s extensive creative output is a restraint that avoids any brashness. Many of his compositions are marked by a lyrical, almost ascetic attitude. He strives for a new form of tonality beyond conventional structures.
