Michael ‘Mikey J’ Asante

Michael ‘Mikey J’ Asante MBE is a renowned London-born producer, composer and DJ with over 20 years in UK Black music. In 2022, he received an MBE for services to Hip-Hop Dance and Music. Asante’s film, TV and theatre work includes scoring Kneecap (2024 Sundance NEXT Audience Award winner), now Ireland’s Oscar entry, and Netflix’s African Queens: Njinga, which earned him a 2023 Emmy nomination. He also composed for The Effect, Tree, and Clotilda: Last American Slave Ship, and collaborated with Brian Eno on Top Boy. Asante co-founded the Olivier Award-winning hip-hop dance company Boy Blue, resident at London’s Barbican. He’s also Professor of electronic music at Guildhall and a Governor at The Place Theatre. His credits include R.E.B.E.L., Blak Whyte Gray, The Five & the Prophecy of Prana, and music for Street Dance 3D. He’s worked with artists including Kano, Estelle, and George the Poet. Beyond performance, Asante mentors and teaches directing, choreography, and music.
