Whole worlds lie between the Beatles and a Broadway musical, between yesterday and tomorrow there is today. But what lies between “Yesterday” and “Tomorrow”, between the best-known of all Beatles songs and the hit from the musical “Annie”? Annie Dorsen uses this interstice to create an excitingly unpredictable musical journey: For “Yesterday Tomorrow” – in collaboration with composer Joanna Bailie, Pierre Godard, and Greg Beller from the Paris sound research centre IRCAM – she has designed a computer algorithm which calculates a new route from the starting point “Yesterday” to the goal “Tomorrow” every time. The results are relayed to three singers on stage acoustically and visually in real time. While the destination is clear, the way to get there remains open and as time elapses, the past recedes ever further into the background and the future emerges ever more distinctly.
