MaerzMusik continues its exploration of the complex legacy of Julius Eastman (1940–1990). The Afro-American composer, musician and performer takes centre stage in the multi-part project “We Have Delivered Ourselves from the Tonal – Of, with, towards, on Julius Eastman”, developed by MaerzMusik together with SAVVY Contemporary. The focus lies not solely on rediscovering Eastman’s much-neglected original compositions. Rather, the aim is to conduct a current reading of Eastman – as a multifaceted artist, as a political being, and as a spiritual person – by means of an exhibition, performances, concerts and a symposium.

The opening concert presents German premieres of important Eastman works from the 1970s and 1980s, ranging from solo voice to ten violoncellos, 16 electric guitars and ensemble. An evening rich in intoxicating, postminimalist sonic textures.
