19:00 introduction
Harrison Birtwistle’s work starts gloomily, but a great force slowly mounts in the background. The intensity of the music is constantly ratcheted up, resulting in a tonal drama. Here, Richard Strauss’s ebulliently triumphal tone poems appear to be reflected through the experience of the twentieth century. Benjamin Britten’s 1939 violin concerto forms a bridge between these two musical minds.
