The 3sat-Award Goes to Director Anita Vulesica / 3sat to Present Four “Starke Stücke” From the 62nd Theatertreffen

As part of the 62ndTheatertreffen, the 3sat-Award, which comes with a prize sum of 10,000 Euros, will go to director Anita Vulesica for her invited production “Die Maschine oder: Über allen Gipfeln ist Ruh” from Deutsches SchauSpielHaus Hamburg. The award ceremony will take place on Tuesday, 6 May 2025, following the performance at Haus der Berliner Festspiele. The 3sat-Award will be given to Anita Vulesica by 3sat-coordinator Natalie Müller-Elmau.

“’Wandrers Nachtlied (Wanderer’s Nightsong)’: French author Georges Perec (1936 – 1982) took this poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe as the foundation of his 1968 audio play ‘Die Maschine’. Here, it is circuits who communicate rather than people, and an authority called ‘Control’ dismantles the text into its individual components. Director Anita Vulesica proves that this audio play is also an eminently interesting text for the theatre stage. She follows the author’s attempt to systematise the world, while also showing that the fragility of words holds an allure that defies all definition. She creates a show of dancing syllables, about language as material, but also about power and resistance, and silence as a political force. Funny, serious, trashy and, time and again, pausing in all the treetops.” – This is how the prize jury, which consists of Nora Hertlein-Hull (director Theatertreffen, Berliner Festspiele), Wolfgang Horn (editor of the ZDF-department of music and theatre) and Katrin Ullmann (theatre critic and member of the Theatertreffen-jury) comment choosing Anita Vulesica.

Anita Vulesica was born in Munich, grew up in Zadar/Croatia and studied acting at the “Ernst Busch” University of Theatre Arts Berlin. From 2001 to 2004, she was a member of the acting company at Theaterhaus Jena; since 2004, she has performed as a freelance actor at various city and state theatres across Germany. From 2008 to 2010, she worked at Schauspiel Leipzig, and she received the Leipzig Theatre Award there in 2009. From 2010 to 2018, she was a member of the acting company at Deutsches Theater Berlin. Since 2015, she has been regularly directing shows and writing texts. As a director she worked at theatres including Schauspielhaus Graz, Theater Basel, Volksbühne Berlin, Vienna’s Burgtheater and Deutsches Theater Berlin. Two of her productions have received the Viennese Theatre Prize NESTROY and Anita Vulesica herself has won the same award in the category of “Best Director”. Apart from her theatre work, she also acts in film and television and works as an actor in audio plays and voice dubbing.

The 3sat-programme Kulturzeit will present a portrait of 3sat-Award-Winner Anita Vulesica on Thursday, 8 May 2025 at 19:20h. The actor, language-acrobat, comedian and director will talk about the theatre’s current challenges and opportunities, and about what makes her production “DieMaschine oder: Über allen Gipfeln ist Ruh” special. Furthermore, Anita Vulesica will present her latest production “Der Liebling” at Deutsches Theater Berlin from the middle of its set.

As Berliner Festspiele’s media partner, 3sat has bestowed the 3sat-Award annually for an artistically innovative performance by one or more artists from among the invited ensembles since 1997. Previous recipients of the prize include Claudia Bauer, Lina Beckmann, Sandra Hüller, Milo Rau and Christoph Schlingensief. 2025 sees the 30th consecutive year of partnership between 3sat and Theatertreffen.

Which impact do the actors of “Bernarda Albas Haus” hope to make by showing violence against women and the resulting spiral of hate on stage? Which are the impulses that director Luise Voigt would like to set by raising the question of whether arms can produce peace in her production of “Die Gewehre der Frau Carrar / Würgendes Blei”? And “Kulturzeit” will also explore why the cast of “Unser Deutschlandmärchen” addresses the hopes and disillusionment of migrants with a tone of both desperation and humour.
