By Ohad Naharin
Batsheva Dance Company
Premiere Februar 2005, Tel-Aviv, Israel
Simply THREE is the name of this piece by Ohad Naharin, because it consists of three parts: Bellus, Humus, Secus.
In Bellus (Beautiful), Ohad Naharin examines the mathematical logic of Bach's music using the Goldberg Variations as interpreted by Glenn Gould.
In Humus (Earth), nine dancers explore the possibilities of their bodies - weight, balance and gravity - to Brian Eno's minimalist music, at first very slowly, gradually becoming more determined until they develop a momentum of their own in circular circles.
In Secus (sex), all 17 dancers are on stage. To Ohad Fishof's music compilation of Chan Chan, Kid 606 and Rayon (mixed by Stephan Ferry), AGF, Fennesz, Kaho Naa Pyar Hai, Seefeel and The Beach Boys), the choreography alternates contrapuntally between individual and ensemble performance.
The Batsheva Dance Company has been one of the best and most sought-after dance ensembles in the world since the early 1990s. Founded in 1964 by Martha Graham and Baroness Batsheva De Rothschild, the company became one of Israel's artistic flagships under choreographer Ohad Naharin, who was also the company's artistic director from 1990-2003.
The Batsheva Dance Company is an international team consisting of Israeli and non-Israeli soloists. In addition to the highest possible artistic performance, the company's stated aims also include strengthening social values and a respectful relationship between Jewish and Arab culture.
