A reading by P.E.N. to mark “Writers in Prison” day

In November each year the international writers’ union P.E.N. (Poets, Essayists & Novelists) commemorates those writers who are being persecuted around the world. Arrested, tortured, murdered because they wish to exercise their right to free opinion and because those who have usurped power fear such freedom. The uprisings in the Arab world were preceded by literary rebellions. Those rebels, the writers and journalists who struggled and suffered for freedom with their words, will be given a voice this evening.

With Edith Clever and Hanns Zischler
plus a conversation with the Arab journalist and author Ibtisam Azem

Chair Hans Thill

Presented by P.E.N. Centre Germany in co-operation with the Berliner Festspiele | internationales literaturfestival berlin
