About the Festival

The interdisciplinary festival “Performing Exiles” presents a scene of artists who have left their countries of origin for a variety of reasons and who shape Berlin’s cultural life. It reflects descriptions of exile beyond the narrow concepts of flight and persecution; instead, the participants’ biographies are globalised from the outset. At the same time, it sees itself as a structural initiative and will form connections with international positions.

School for Dissident Friendship

“School for Dissident Friendship” is an intensive three-week study programme in Berlin that supports eighteen artists and cultural workers. It is organised by the Berliner Festspiele in collaboration with Ashkal Alwan and the Akademie der Künste, Berlin, as part of the multidisciplinary festival “Performing Exiles” in summer 2023.
