Confronting The Shadow © Left Bank Theatre, Sofiia Oleksenko
The play “Confronting the Shadow” is an attempt by the Ukrainian director Tamara Trunova and her cast to come to terms with a new reality while also challenging it: what is real in this new reality resulting from the Russian war of aggression? The production explicitly questions the stereotype of Ukrainian indestructibility. The director also attempts to bring Ukrainians’ incontestable right to live and retain their identity – at least until the next rocket attack – out from the shadow of political and historical bias. “Confronting the Shadow” puts forward an interpretation of this new reality that acknowledges contradictions and definitely isn’t what a European audience expects from Ukrainian theatre.
In the face of extermination and despite it – they will perform.
