“If we’re going to discuss architecture, we should first experience a camp situation, one without walls or a roof˜, according to Kyohei Sakaguchi. He believes that it doesn’t take much to create a home. Inspired by the mobile lifestyle and survival strategies of the Japanese homeless in large cities, this architect, writer and painter questions our consumer lifestyle and the definition of private and public space. His Zero Yen Houses are residential constructions that cost very little because they are created with materials that others throw away: construction site waste, disused car batteries and solar cells that produce just enough electricity to power a stove or a TV. These houses can be easily taken apart and rebuilt elsewhere as they are made up of several separate parts. From this original idea of recycling, Sakaguchi further developed the principle of mobility in his portable houses. A loophole in Japanese construction law, in which a structure on wheels does not count as a dwelling, makes it possible for Sakaguchi to erect mobile residences on derelict or public land. This form of housing reinterprets the concept of property and aims to reclaim common living space. For Foreign Affairs, Sakaguchi will erect a mobile house on wheels in front of the Haus der Berliner Festspiele: a five-part dwelling made of plywood with a past will house the pianist Mario Formenti for three weeks, where he will play the piano while audiences are invited to come and go as they please.The construction material is partly made up of elements from the project &Uuml;BER LEBENSKUNST/Instant City Initiative.

“A kind of pagan chapel where life and music can become one” is Marino Formenti’s description of “Nowhere”. Boundaries between time and space become blurred, allowing the artist to reflect on music, make frequent experiments and rediscover wonder through repetition. For three weeks, the mobile house, created by Kyohei Sakaguchi, will become a stage in front of the Haus der Berliner Festspiele to house the Italian pianist and conductor. It represents a threshold between the private and the public, the interior and exterior, providing a space in which the musician will eat, sleep and spend the whole day at the piano, playing a repertoire from John Cage, Morton Feldman and Louis Couperin – artists whose emphasis was on the moment and who deliberately dispensed with development. Silence and concentrated sound alternate in “Nowhere”, the aim being to “disappear” into the music – a far cry from the usual structures of time and reception. Ethnographic exhibitions were popular attractions for fairgrounds in the western world from the mid-19th century onwards. Eager European and American spectators flocked in masses to these ‘human zoos’ where non-westerners were put on display in mock native villages. In “Exhibit B”, South African theatre director Brett Bailey, whose company Third World Bunfight has constantly focussed on South Africa’s post-colonial present and the relationship between Africa and the western world, evokes this form of human exhibition and aligns it with contemporary experiences of exclusion. Namibian performers and African immigrants living in Berlin are subject to the gaze of spectators in a walk-through installation. The props and setting reflect European colonial history in Namibia and in the Congo states as well as contemporary migration and deportation. The works of the “Exhibit” series deal with the colonial history of different European countries and began with “Exhibit A”, produced by Wiener Festwochen (Vienna) and the Festival Theaterformen (Braunschweig).

On Gropius Bau’s ground floor, colourful wallpapers, structures, objects and open-ended material called “loose parts” configure flexible spaces that are shaped by children’s activities.

Ligia Lewis is a central figure in redefining performance within the context of the visual arts. In her multifaceted practice, she combines performance, live installation and film. &nbsp;From autumn 2025, Gropius Bau presents I’M NOT HERE FORRRRR…, the artist and choreographer’s most comprehensive solo exhibition to date. It brings together new and existing works that explore themes of race, gender, violence and resistance.

6 and 7 March 2026How does the bourgeois longing for revolt take shape, when the faith in progress and reason is unsettled? Berlin-based artist and director Leila Hekmat explores this question in her newly commissioned performance Roses Rising – The Movement, premiering in the Gropius Bau’s atrium. Moving between concert and ballet, the piece transforms the space into a landscape hovering between bunker, rehearsal room and dreamscape and invites the audience to witness a dinner party unravel into a happening.

19 March to 28 June 2026Working in New York City between the Stonewall uprising of 1969 and the onset of the AIDS crisis in the 1980s, Peter Hujar captured a pivotal cultural moment in piercing black-and-white photographs. In the exhibition Persistence of Vision, Hujar’s photographs are interspersed with contemporary works by New York City-based artist Liz Deschenes, opening up an intergenerational dialogue on photography.&nbsp;

On the night of 30 December 2025, Ulrich Eckhardt, long-time artistic director of the Berliner Festspiele (1973–2000), passed away at the age of 91 after a short illness.Ulrich Eckhardt (born May 28, 1934, Rheine/Westphalia) was an outstanding cultural manager, musician, lawyer and, for decades, a defining figure on the international and Berlin cultural scene. The Berliner Festspiele mourn the loss of Ulrich Eckhardt. At the same time, we thank him for his extraordinary commitment, which is inextricably linked to the history of the institution and the city of Berlin.After studying law and political science in Freiburg and Münster, training as a pianist and conductor, working as a répétiteur and conductor at the Stadttheater Münster and as cultural advisor to the city of Bonn, Eckhardt took over as artistic director of Berliner Festspiele GmbH in 1973, which he led with visionary energy until the end of 2000. During these almost 28 years, he opened the institution to all branches of the performing and visual arts, thereby shaping Berlin's profile as an international cultural metropolis.Under his directorship, key festival formats such as the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale), the Berliner Festwochen, the Theatertreffen, the Jazzfest Berlin, the Musik-Biennale and the Berliner Lektionen discussion series at the Renaissance Theatre were developed. As an international co-production, artists Nina Laisné and François Chaignaud and singer Nadia Larcher have developed a performance that is carried by music, singing and dance at once. In “Último helecho”, European Baroque meets South American folklore and mythology.
