Stage curtains that are raised in time to Strauss’ great waltzing melodies, ethereal music, the twittering of birds, balloons that take up the action and lead the movement – a gigantic creature that seems to be breathing. Dancers emerge, leaving traces in the lighting, creating hints of colour in the stage gloom before disappearing again. Somnambulant images of enchanting beauty. But what is it we’re really seeing?
In their early works, Norwegian choreographer Heine Avdal and Japanese choreographer Yukiko Shinozaki explored the theme of semi-public places such as hotels and offices. Beginning with their search in the absurd yet poetic transitional worlds of triviality, they fused their survey of society with aesthetic research. In their most recent work, “nothing’s for something”, Avdal and Shinozaki return to the space of theatre. Inspired by Paul Klee who danced while he painted, Rainer Maria Rilke and Georges Perec, the master of everyday miniatures, they uncover moments that interrupt the compulsions and routines of everyday life. A reflection on theatre, performance, dance and installation, spatial and imaginative limits: a visually powerful, atmospheric journey into the fantastic reality beyond the visible world.
