Zachary Oberzan: Tell Me Love Is Real © Manu Bloemen
This story begins with a real-life coincidence, or so it seems. This coincidence strangely connects actor Zachary Oberzan with Whitney Houston. At approximately the same time, Houston and Oberzan sat in anonymous hotel rooms on the West Coast and overdosed on the drug Xanax. Tragically Houston died. Oberzan lived. Now, Oberzan is telling his story in an extraordinary tour de force between individual tragedy and public comedy, in musical theatre style. It’s a classic one-man show, a format in which he has long established himself as a considerable virtuoso, after his time with theatre collective Nature Theatre of Oklahoma (Focus artists of Foreign Affairs in 2013), and his solo projects. Entertaining and profound, the show makes use of a number of pop icons including Serge Gainsbourg, Buddy Holly, Bruce Lee, and Amelia Earhart. At the end, there is no schmaltzy reconciliation, only a never ending quest; and a promise that “I will always love you.”
