The evening-length hip-hop production “Gravity” by the National Youth Dance Company (NYDC) with 33 dancers aged 16 to 25 from all over England can be seen as a guest performance at the 12th Tanztreffen der Jugend on 28 September 2025. The choreography for the project is by Boy Blue dance company, winners of the Sky Arts Award and the Olivier Award and led by Artistic Directors Michael “Mikey J” Asante and Kenrick “H2O” Sandy. “Gravity” is about the forces of attraction that connect people and create communities.
Guest performance as part of “Über die Grenzen”.
The creation of “Gravity” unfolded over the course of four intensive residencies, during which the dancers grew not only artistically but also personally. The diversity within the company – from unique personalities and dance styles to varied personal backgrounds – became one of its greatest strengths.
“There’s this pull – like gravity – between the young people, their art, and the audience,” says Kenrick “H2O” Sandy, describing the dynamic. “When young people come together and support one another, something powerful emerges.” Michael “Mikey J” Asante adds: “When we give young artists space and resources, they show us what’s possible. The energy we invest in them is an investment in the culture of tomorrow.”
For many of the dancers, dance is much more than movement – it’s an outlet, a language, a sense of home. “I can express my anger, my sadness, my joy through dance. It helps me process my emotions,” says Zak, one of the participants. Dexter adds: “I often struggled at school. But when I dance, I’m allowed to just be myself. There are no rules. I am free.”
Kenrick “H2O” Sandy, co-founder and co-artistic director of Boy Blue, is an artistic associate at the Barbican Centre in London and is regarded as one of the most influential choreographers of his generation. His work has received numerous accolades, including choreography for the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games and the awarding of an MBE in 2017. Sandy has also choreographed for artists such as FKA Twigs and Rita Ora, as well as for global brands including Nike and adidas.
Michael “Mikey J” Asante, co-founder of Boy Blue, is a composer, producer, and board member at the Barbican. He creates music for stage, film, and television, and he is a professor of electronic music at Guildhall School of Music. His credits include “Free Your Mind”, “Blak Whyte Gray”, “Tree, and the hit series “Top Boy”. In 2022, he was awarded an MBE for his contributions to hip-hop and music.
