For over a decade, the National Youth Dance Company (NYDC), organized and hosted by Sadler's Wells, has been looking for the most talented young dancers in England to develop a new piece each year with a guest choreographer, which will tour the UK with performances after its premiere.
How does this unique model of nurturing emerging talent in dance work—and what possibilities does it offer for an inclusive and diverse future in the art form?
The young dancers of the National Youth Dance Company (NYDC), who have come together from across England, begin by sharing their experiences during the rehearsal period and the creative process behind “Gravity”. Following this, we enter into conversation with choreographers Kenrick “H2O” Sandy and Michael “Mikey J” Asante of Boy Blue, as well as NYDC’s Artistic Director Hanna Kirkpatrick, to explore the company’s working methods, structure, and inclusive practice. Together, we take a closer look at innovative models that are helping to shape and strengthen youth dance production in the UK. What visions and perspectives are emerging for the dance of tomorrow?
