
Born in Hoyerswerda in Saxony, Ulrich Mertin studied the viola and violin in Würzburg and at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin. Grants took him to the Wiener Philharmonikern, the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, the Darmstadt Summer Courses and the International Ensemble Modern Academy. Ulrich Mertin has worked with György Kurtág, Helmut Lachenmann, Klaus Huber, Rebecca Saunders, George Benjamin, Georg Katzer, Helmut Oehring, Brett Dean and Younghi Pagh-Paan, as well as with the Ensemble musikFabrik, Klangforum Wien, Ensemble Modern and Ensemble Resonanz. Recently, Ulrich Mertin has been increasingly active as a conductor and composer of film music. As director of Istanbul-based Hezarfen Ensemble he is an important actor on the Turkish music scene.
