Adriana Altaras was born in 1960 in Zagreb. In 1964 she moved to Italy, from 1967 onwards school in Germany and Italy. In 1979 high school in Marburg, Hesse. From 1979–83 she studied at the Hochschule der Künste, Berlin. There she completed her diploma in acting. From 1983–84 postgraduate course at New York University, theatre wing. From 1984 co-founder of fringe theatre Zum Westlichen Stadthirschen, Berlin, active there as an author/actress/director until 1991. From 1992 instructor for acting at Hochschule der Künste, Berlin, musicals/show program. Collaboration with Steven Spielberg’s Shoah Foundation. Artistic direction of the Jüdische Kulturtage 2002 in Berlin. Active as a director for music and spoken theater. Active as an actress for film, television and theatre, with engagements at the Freie Volksbühne, Berlin; Maxim Gorki Theater, Berlin; Theater Basel; Schlosstheater Moers; among others: awarded the Marivaux Theater Prize of the Land of North Rhine Westphalia in 1993 for “Verführung auf beiden Seiten” with Joachim Król. Stadttheater Konstanz, Komödie am Kudamm, Berlin among others. Currently, Adriana Altaras plays Golde in the musical “Anatevka” at St. Pauli-Theater, Hamburg. Director Uli Waller. Accolades include the Bundesfilmpreis 1988, the Golden Horse Award for Best Foreign Actress, Taiwan, 1989, the 2. Publikumspreis Friedrich Luft in 1999 for “La Sorella Amante” by Johann A. Hasse at the Neuköllner Oper, Berlin and the Silver Bear for acting at the Berlinale 2000.
In 2011, her first novel, “Titos Brille”, was published; in 2014 the second, “Doitscha”, both at Kiepenheuer & Witsch, Cologne. In autumn 2016 her volume of columns appeared, also at Kiepenheuer und Witsch. Since 2014 she has been writing for Zeit Online. In autumn 2014 her documentary film “Titos Brille” appeared in cinemas. Adriana Altaras lives in Berlin, has two sons, Aaron und Lenny, a husband (composer), Karate brown belt.
