The relationship between the human race and nature, storytelling, and exploration of materials are some of the inspirations that shape the works of the Norwegian interdisciplinary composer and artist Tine Surel Lange (born 1989, Vesterålen, Norway). Based in Lofoten, Northern Norway, she is currently exploring how visual materials and movements can be interpreted sonically, and how sound can be visualized using video, light, movement, painting, and sculpture.
Surel Lange studied composition at the Norwegian Academy of Music with an exchange semester spent studying digital composition at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre. Additionally, she studied sound design and sound art at Sonic College, along with studies in early music and viola da gamba at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen. She has worked with electroacoustic composition at ZKM (DE), CCRMA (US), Notam (NO), EMS (SE) and LMTA MiSC (LT). Since 2017 she has been working full-time as a composer and interdisciplinary artist presenting compositions, installations, performances, and presentations all over the world.
Tine Surel Lange was awarded Samfunnsløftets Artist Grant 2024 and a work grant from the Ingerid, Synnøve and Elias Fegerstens Foundation for Norwegian composers and musicians in 2024, the Norwegian Government Grants for Artists for 2023-24, a 1-year work grant from The Composer’s Remuneration Fund in 2022, Sparebankstiftelsen Sparebank1 Nord-Norge’s Talent Grant in 2023 and UngKunst grant in 2018. She was selected for Talent Norway’s KUPP program in 2020.
Her works have been performed by ensembles such as BIT20 (NO), asamisimasa (NO), Ensemble KNM Berlin (DE), Red Note Ensemble (UK), Damkapellet (DK), Tøyen Fil og Klafferi (NO), Aksiom ensemble (NO), K!ART (DK), Lydenskab (DK), Collective Lovemusic (FR), Chordos Quartet (LT), Molot Ensemble (RU), among others.
She is a member of the artistic council at Aurora Records and a deputy board member at Kunstkvarteret, a previous expert committee member at Arts Council Norway, and a previous leader and board member of nyMusikk Nordland.
