Stefan Goldmann
Stefan Goldmann develops electronic music that re-examines the core features of techno: track, remix, sample and loop are stretched to their limits, revealing their essence and yielding surprising new forms. His works range from techno tracks to large format compositions for dance, film or ensembles.
After studying audio communication at Berlin’s Technische Universität, Stefan Goldmann has released music with internationally leading labels and has produced several albums and EPs. He has remixed works by Igor Stravinsky, Christian Fennesz and Santiago Salazar among many others and has received major commissions from NyMusikk Norway, Nationaltheater Mannheim and BASF Kulturprogramm among others. For sites such as the Honen-In Temple in Kyoto and several European festivals he has developed site-specific works and concert programs, collaborating with dance companies, ensembles and other composers along the way. Together with Finn Johannsen he founded Macro in 2007, which has been described as “the leading avant-garde techno label” by De:Bug Magazine. Besides performing throughout Europe, North and South America and Asia in clubs and at festivals (including Mutek Montreal, Club2Club Torino, Time Warp Mannheim, Now Festival Essen, Unlock Buenos Aires, Only Connect Oslo and Star Festival Osaka), Macro label nights have provided him with broader-context showcases in cities such as Berlin, New York, Paris, London, Vienna and Tokyo.
For Berlin’s Berghain club Stefan Goldmann conceived the “Elektroakustischer Salon” event series and writes a bi-monthly column for the club’s program flyer. His works have been included in the annual polls of Resident Advisor, Groove, Textura and LWE and he was a fellow at Kyoto’s Villa Kamogawa in 2012. His texts on digitisation and the aesthetics of electronic music have appeared in Wire, Groove, LWE and other media. His book “Presets – Digital Shortcuts To Sound” has been published in 2015 by Bookworm (UK), with a French edition to follow in 2016 through Editions Audimat. He has held lectures and workshops at Universität der Künste Berlin, DAAD, Folkwang University and Goethe Institutes throughout Europe and Japan. “Parameter”, a documentary film on Stefan Goldmann by Michael Schade and Thomas Kipke, is available on DVD.
