Jan St. Werner is a Berlin-based artist and composer whose sound works seek dialogue with visual art and architecture. Werner has initiated collaborative projects such as the Transnational Sound Initiative and has curated exhibitions and festivals including The Sound of Distance at HKW Berlin, docu/fiction at Kunsthalle Düsseldorf and 21 Again at HAU 1 & 1 in Berlin. His works have been presented at institutions such as the Lenbachhaus Munich, ICA London, the Ural Biennale, documenta 14, the DAAD Gallery Berlin, MSU Zagreb, as well as at Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Chicago Symphony Center, and Ruhrtriennale. In 2023, Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden presented his first solo exhibition Space Synthesis. In 2024, he was one of six artists representing Germany at the Venice Biennale.
He is a member of the music groups Mouse on Mars and Microstoria, and has collaborated with musicians such as Mark E. Smith, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Stereolab, and The National. He was Professor of Dynamic Acoustic Research at the Academy of Fine Arts Nuremberg and has been a professor at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen since 2025.
