Lucia Bihler, born in Munich in 1988, studied directing at the Hochschule für Schauspielkunst Ernst Busch and devoted a master's semester to choreography with Wanda Golonka. During her studies she realised projects with the independent company gold&hiebe at the bat-Studiotheater, Ballhaus Ost and Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin.
After her studies, she directed for the first time at the Deutsches Theater Göttingen. Further productions followed at the Schauspielhaus Wien, Staatstheater Mainz, Staatstheater Oldenburg, Theater Lübeck, Schauspiel Leipzig and Schauspiel Hannover, among others.
At the Staatstheater Mainz, her production of “Die Verwirrungen des Zöglings Törless”, based on the novel by Robert Musil, was enthusiastically received as an “extremely precisely choreographed nightmare; despite some tightening, the stage version holds the narrative threads together as tightly as the director holds her team together. No image, no sound, no movement is left to chance” (nachtkritik.de).
Her production of Robert Menasse’s novel “Die Hauptstadt” at the Schauspielhaus Wien was invited to the Munich festival Radikal jung 2019.
Between 2019 and 2021 Bihler was in-house director and part of the artistic direction at the Volksbühne Berlin.
In 2020/21 she staged “Iphigenie. Traurig und geil im Taurerland” based on a text by Stefanie Sargnagel at Volksbühne Berlin, “Die Jagdgesellschaft” by Thomas Bernhard at Burgtheater in Vienna and “Der endlose Sommer” at Schauspiel Köln. With “Orlando” she continued her collaboration with Schauspiel Köln in the 2021/22 season.
In 2023 she is invited to the Theatertreffen with her production of “Die Eingeborenen von Maria Blut” by Maria Lazar at the Burgtheater.
