100° Diaspora

How can we write the next chapter of our ancestors’ resistance? What legacy will we leave behind? How can a war be followed by reconciliation? What happens if we deliberately make space for the void we feel inside? Can watching a spider change our everyday lives? Can mayflies change our attitude to death? What would happen if earthlings swapped roles with aliens? How can borders be broken down? Where do governments hide their secrets? What are the strategies of climate activists in Iran? What if sex work were treated like a normal office job? How can reading coffee grounds be seen as social technology?

These questions and others will be asked by 45 diasporic artists and groups on five stages over three days in the Haus der Berliner Festspiele during the stage and performance marathon “100° Diaspora”. The programme has not been curated thematically: artists were able to apply and were then invited on a first come – first served basis, provided their proposals could be realised. With the format “100° Diaspora” Performing Exiles aims to present as broad a spectrum as possible of the Berlin-based diaspora working in the arts within a format that enables the artists to participate comprehensively. The open call generated an enormous response within a very short time – proof of how large and varied this artistic landscape is in Berlin and how urgently performance opportunities are needed in the city. “100° Diaspora” is an attempt to make the boundaries and possibilities of our lived political and social reality tangible in aesthetic form. Its challenging programme with more than 150 participating artists works on the premise that participants, audiences and presenters will be equally prepared to engage with each other and with contradictory views and unforeseen developments – both thematically and aesthetically. Holders of day tickets can explore the programme for “100° Diaspora” at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele for themselves. The performances extend from the side stage to the main stage and the backstage area, into the upper foyer and outside in the garden. And the “Club de Baile”, the Festival Centre in the Kassenhalle, also provides space to meet and exchange ideas. Each day ends with a Midnight Conversation for mutual reflection: here dramaturgs and programmers are invited to talk about what they have seen and place it in context.

The Goethe Institut im Exil is the co-operation partner responsible for supporting the framing programme for “100° Diaspora”. As well as jointly planning and delivering the Midnight Conversations, the Goethe Institut im Exil also offers the workshop “Funding the Future: Navigating Cultural Funding in Germany and Europe.” Here, artists and participants in “100° Diaspora” can gain insights and hands on advice about transnational cultural funding in Germany and Europe. The workshop will be led by Sebastian Hoffmann (International Theatre Institute) and Alessia Caratelli (Culture Moves Europe, Goethe Institut).
