Andrii Merkhel, born in Kyiv in 1986, studied composition with Jewhen Stankowytsch at the National Music Academy of Ukraine and with Jerzy Kornowicz in Warsaw. He has also participated in composition workshops given by Serhii Pilyutikov, Carola Bauckholt, Martin Smolka and Dmitri Kurljandski. In his compositions, Merkhel combines conceptual approaches with performative practices and observes creative processes from an anthropological perspective. He has composed numerous chamber music, stage and symphonic works which have been performed in the Ukraine, Germany, Austria, Poland, Lithuania, the USA and Canada. Merkhel works with leading soloists and ensembles in the Ukraine and Europe. He is the co-founder and artistic director of the Sed Contra Ensemble and the Daraba Studio, the founder of the Ars Teteriv Stage Festival, co-curator of the music and theatre laboratory Sound.Voice.Silence and the founder of the Center of Cross-Art Communication. He has received several scholarships and been awarded the Lewko-Revutskyj Prize.
