Thomas Schäfer

Thomas Schäfer, born 1967 in Hamburg, studied Musicology, Literature and Philosophy at the University of Hamburg. He received a PhD 1997 at Humboldt University Berlin and 1998/99 a Postdoc at Hamburg University, at the same time he worked as producer for contemporary music at North German Radio in Hamburg. 2000 – 2007 he was curator for the festivals Wien Modern, Hörgänge and responsible for the new music activities at Konzerthaus Vienna (e.g. concert series “generator”).

2008 he was consultant for Wien Modern, and participated in a scientific project related to the music of Roman Haubenstock-Ramati (in cooperation with Paul Sacher Foundation, Basle and Music Academy Basle). As Author, editor and curator in the field of contemporary music Thomas Schäfer has earned international reputation. Since 2009 he is Director of the International Music Institute Darmstadt (IMD) and Artistic Director of the International Summer Course Darmstadt.
