Catalina Insignares

Catalina Insignares (1987, Bogota, Colombia) is a dancer and choreographer based in Paris. She studied dance in Canada and France and obtained a Master in Choreography and Performance from Giessen University. As a choreographer, she is interested in pieces that question production systems in art and society. She is looking for that moment when dance, touch and movement escape their disciplinary regimes and generate unintelligible, unapologetic, what-ever-like subjectivities and collectivities. Her work is mainly built through collaborations in staging, dramaturgy and performing (Carolina Mendonça, Else Tunemyr, Miriam Schulte, Caroline Creutzburg, Rodrigo Andreolli, Zuzana Zabkova, Myriam Lefkowitz). Since 2015, she has been developing a one-to-one dance piece and long-term practise entitled “us as a useless duet”, (Kanuti Gildi Saal – Tallinn, PaF – St.Erme, Galeria Trafo – Giessen, Danza Común – Bogotá, Point Éphemère – Paris). In 2018, together with Carolina Mendonça she created a work involving a night-reading directed at sleeping bodies and called “useless land”, created within the framework of the exhibition “the dead are losing or how to ruin an exhibition” in Berlin, curated by Christopher Weickenmeier, and reactivated at Elsewhere&Otherwise (PaF – St.Erme) and Precarious Pavilions (Brussels). A year ago, she began a research on how to use the sensorial and fictional means of dance to develop ways to communicate with the invisible (“Bouillon”), particularly with the dead (“ese muerto se lo cargo yo”). Since 2017, she has been working with choreographer Myriam Lefkowitz, not only as a performer in her immersive works, but also in a collaboration that tries to find ways of infiltrating sensorial practises derived from their works into a variety of social contexts. In the context of the Parisian suburbs, they work with young refugees and they expect to soon work in the post-conflict context of Colombia.
