German-Russian conductor and pianist Andreas Schulz was born in 1982 in Alma-Ata (Kazakhstan). With the support of the “Internationale Musikakademie zur Förderung Hochbegabter in Deutschland (International Music Academy for the Promotion of Highly Gifted Students in Germany)”, he studied piano with Prof. Galina Ivanzova at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin, obtaining his diploma with honours in 2009. Distinguished by receiving several international awards, such as the “International Shostakovich Competition” and the “International Louise Henriette Competition”, he immediately went on to train as a conductor under Chief Musical Director Georg Christoph Sandmann. He took his career as a conductor into his own hands, leaving nothing to chance. His years of working as a visiting tutor for coaching at several German music academies (Weimar, Rostock, Berlin) made him familiar with the musical work and individual requirements of various groups of instruments at an early stage and enabled him to found his own orchestra, Junges Sinfonieorchester Berlin. Thus, he was soon able to transfer his detailed and precise musical work from the piano’s keyboard to the conductor’s podium.
As the founder and principal conductor of Junges Sinfonieorchester Berlin, he has been performing regularly at various events and festivals. He has conducted the ensemble at the Berlin Philharmonie, at Konzerthaus Berlin, Admiralspalast and at the sold-out broadcasting hall of the Wiesbadener Kurhaus. One particular highlight of 2016 was the programme “Grenzenlos Oper” at the Berlin Philharmonie. Together with an international ensemble of singers, he presented Rachmaninov’s opera “Aleko” and Tchaikovsky’s “Jolanthe”.
The young conductor has been regularly collaborating with the State Symphony Orchestra of Kaliningrad, Russia, where he has been a regular visiting conductor since 2013. Other highlights of his conducting career so far include concerts with the State Philharmony Astana and the Symphony Orchestras of Karaganda and Petropavlovsk (Kazakhstan), the Deutsche Streicherphilharmonie and the Symphonic Orchestra Tchernigov (Ukraine). He accepted invitations to Jekaterinenburg, Ufa, Döbeln and Freiberg (Mittelsächsische Philharmonie). In 2015, he performed as a guest conductor in Staßfurt (Mitteldeutsche Kammerphilharmonie), Frankfurt and Wiesbaden, among others. In 2016, he was in charge of rehearsals and musical direction of the production “Die Fledermaus” by Mitteldeutsche Kammerphilharmonie. Concert tours as a conductor and pianist took him to France, Kazakhstan, Russia, South Korea, Finland, Poland, Romania, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Ukraine.
His energetic and surprising interpretations are based on a precise musical analysis and knowledge of scores. Working and promoting young musicians in the Junges Sinfonieorchester Berlin, independent programming and choice of repertoires, permanent variations of different performance formats with his own ensemble and not least his own executive work behind the scenes, combined with new approaches toward cultural financing have sharpened his integrated perspective as a conductor. He likes to lend particular accents due to his German-Russian origins to his repertoire, which ranges from baroque to modern music. Both challenging and playfully humorous, Andreas Schulz knows how to take himself and his orchestra to their musical limits. He is driven by a great curiosity and dedicated spirit of research in the quest for his own musical answers. Andreas Schulz knows how to inspire – both onstage and behind the scenes.
