LaLaLa Human Steps – Montréal

Guest Performance as part of Tanz im August

German premiere

Faithful to his reputation for daring eclecticism and high velocity, the Canadian choreographer Édouard Lock has taken some of the most important Romantic ballets (including Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty) as his starting point for AMJAD, proceeding to blend poetry, tradition and modernity. Lock was particularly drawn to the forest theme common to both ballets; that is, to the forest as an allegory of the unconscious, of the non-rational, animal and even monstrous side of human nature, to that element which falls outside the standards of society, much like the sensuality and desire that met with such resistance during the Romantic era.

„Welcome to the world of AMJAD, the latest work from LaLaLa Human Steps, whose dance has lost nothing of its physical and emotional impact. Mr. Lock offers up some of the most moving partnered sequences of his career, including a three-man waltz – as masculine as it is delicate – and a surprising pas de deux.“
