Road Theater USA – Coming Home

“Start Up”
By Roland Schimmelpfennig
English translation by Daniel Brunet

GTA’s Coming Home

For seven weeks the green school bus toured the USA from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. On board an international team and with them the play “Start Up” by Roland Schimmelpfennig, specifically written for this project. “Start Up” tells the story of young Germans who attempt to make their fortune heading west. They have a delicate business idea: Importing culture from the Old Europe.

After 12,000 kilometres and 31 performances in 24 cities GTA is back home and presents not only “Start Up”, but invites you to a theatre expedition into the land of big promises.

Quotes from the Press

So this is big stuff … and it’s funky and eccentric, as well.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Christopher Rawson, 17 October 2007

We’ve all seen multimedia projects, but this was multiple-multimedia … “Start Up” dispels the notion of “Germanic” being dark and heavy.
The Times Picayune (New Orleans), David Cuthbert, 10 November 2007

This uncategorizable production … sends up cultural stereotypes and mythologies in a charmingly oblique and playful way.
Back Stage: ‘Start Up’ by A.J. Mell, 10 October 2007

The play is complex to talk about (in a good way) … the actors did a phenomenal job … they were spot on, well-spoken, and kept the audience thoroughly engaged … an extremely well-organized, well-timed production.
That Other Paper, Chad Hanna, 20 November 2007
