The symposium deals with the relation between theatre building and urbanity since the 19th century. Being established as an building type theatres became more and more relevant in the cityscapes. They helped redefining urban fabrics, for example in the urban reconstruction campaigns of the late 19th century.
The symposium will examine the interferences between theatre building and urbanity. How do theatre architects react to urban contexts? What is the impact of theatre buildings on their surroundings? Architecture and urban planning play an important part in forming society and help defining the relation between theatre building and society.
