Alexander Vantournhout is trained in both contemporary dance and circus. In five microperformances, he sets out to explore the creative kinetic potential of physical limitations as well as the relationships and boundaries between performers and objects.
Ordinarily, a bowling ball only has a single function: to knock down as many pins as possible at the other end of the alley. But what if we were to remove this object from its habitual environment and turn it into a subject?
In “Screws”, together with a dancer and four dance acrobats, Alexander Vantournhout guides the audience through an itinerary of microperformances: Short solos, duets and fine-edged group choreographies reverse the relationship between body and object. The objects attached to the body, such as snow-shoes, bowling balls or anti-gravity shoes, either stabilise the body or throw it out of balance, which can either overcome or enhance the gravitational pull. This challenges the dancers to resist the laws of physics.
This site-specific performance leads spectators along a parcours through and around Haus der Berliner Festspiele. They are free to wander around, join a guide and choose the angles from which they would like to experience the individual miniature compositions.
