In her work, choreographer Marlene Monteiro Freitas explores metamorphosis as a space where identity and alterity blur. With a desire to unravel the boundaries of the fixed and the familiar, she invites the audience into shifting terrains of perception. Her new piece, “NÔT”, (Cape Verdean Creole for ‘night’) draws from “1001 Nights” to create a fable-like structure built on accumulation, interruption and suspense. Tales of love and war, imprisonment and freedom, vice and virtue unfold in layered succession. “NÔT” becomes an artefact of survival and imagination, where, as Freitas writes, “night after night, the stage becomes an onion.”
