A man and a woman on the Chinese Pole. High above the ground. Their bodies entwine, separate, form bizarre shapes in space. Their relationship with each other – a journey, a quest, reflected in their relationship with space. The space itself – an organism that follows its own rules and absorbs the duo into itself.
In “Nebula”, a contemporary circus piece developed by the French Compagnie du Chaos, artistry, light and media design as well as an overall concept of choreography and dramaturgy merge, creating a tight net of connections and references between space, music, light and performers. Rafael de Paula, the company’s artistic director and a circus artist himself, demands the audience’s active sensory involvement: “I am interested in transferring emotions. I create my works as spaces for emotional echoes. Nothing is explicit; I want the spectators to become part of the piece and their experience of the performance to be powerful.” In “Nebula”, he and his colleague Ania Burasczynska not only explore the limits of gravity on the Chinese Pole, they also harness their acrobatic skills to tell the story of a complex relationship between two people. Thus, “Nebula” provides a first impression of the multi-faceted art form of contemporary circus.
Warning: this performance includes stroboscopic effects.
“Nebula” is an awardee of the European project CircusNext 2016, coordinated by Jeunes Talents Cirque Europe and supported by the European commission.
