The story of Tierno Bokar, “The Sage of Bandiagara”, goes to the heart of a traditional, animist Africa, influenced by Islam, devastated by colonialism, torn apart by internal tensions. Peter Brook, who celebrates his eightieth birthday this year, has been working on the theme of Africa for more than three decades. When he set up his own theatre centre in Paris in 1971 (C.I.C.T.), it was intended partly as a statement against racism and nationalism. With his international company, led by Sotigui Kouyaté in the key role of the Islamic scholar Tierno Bokar, Brook continues this first season of spielzeiteuropa in February.
