ORAL EXAM: An Examination

As a child in school learning a new language, I was subject to something called the oral examination. It had two parts: a short passage to read aloud. And a picture, to look at and describe. In this way I learned the languages I needed to learn.
How would you introduce a newcomer to your language to its demands?
