The Theatertreffen is the demonstration of what German-speaking theatre can achieve – and TikTok is the world’s biggest digital stage. An attention-generating machine that is not only politically problematic but which we can also scroll through endlessly for cathartic moments and rage bait. The collective exhibition It Is Reel – Theatertreffen Meets TikTok at Haus der Berliner Festspiele looks for connections between these two media. Ten experts take the 10 selected productions as their starting point to curate and discuss the precarious and beautiful, amusing and touching moving images they can find in the digital universes of the now: why not only the clean girl aesthetic for Il Gattopardo is going out of style. How #GriefTok shares grief and pain in the never-ending years without summers that Florentina Holzinger refers to in her production. And wasn’t the Hauptmann von Köpenick actually the first looksmaxxer?
