Director Jan-Christoph Gockel draws on a wealth of ideas and styles to interweave Friedrich Schiller’s Wallenstein trilogy with the artistic team’s two-year research project on former mercenaries in the present day. 3sat will broadcast the spectacular, multi-hour performance from the Theatertreffen as a time-delayed livestream to the delphi LUX, creating a link between cinema and theatre.

Note: The livestream includes only the stage performance itself; the English surtitles will not be shown.

More information about the production

During the Thirty Years' War, Wallenstein led numerous mercenary armies as commander-in-chief. When he sought political power, the emperor had him assassinated. In 2023, Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the Wagner mercenary group, set out with his troops on a march toward Moscow. The uprising failed, and a plane carrying Prigozhin crashed shortly thereafter. Who are the soldiers, merchants, and children in the entourage—then and now? How do we approach war as a way of life?

An event presented by Yorck-Kino GmbH in cooperation with Berliner Festspiele / Theatertreffen, supported by the German Federal Cultural Foundation, and funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media. Media partner: 3sat.
