The Ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon extends an invitation to an unusual evening of contrasts: three well-known representatives of contemporary dance, Lucinda Childs, Maguy Marin and Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, devised choreographies to Beethoven’s ‘Große Fuge’, from 1825. Whether vibrating study, dynamic struggle or clear analysis, the fugue is reinterpreted by each choreography. ‘Trois Grandes Fugues’ makes the composition visible and audible in highly different ways – and at the same time reflects on the complex relationship between classical music and contemporary dance.

As a classical ensemble with a passion for the contemporary, the Ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon has developed an extensive repertoire over the past twenty years. The ensemble has learned choreographies by Merce Cunningham, Trisha Brown, William Forsythe and Sasha Waltz, but has also worked with Benjamin Millepied and Mathilde Monnier. Its artistic director is Yorgos Loukos.
