A play for 108 Berliners, 13 Argentinians and five generations

121 men, women and children spanning all generations go in search of a community and their identity. But in their attempt to organize themselves, this crowd of people disintegrates into isolated groups: the old gather together, the dark-haired men, the young girls. Each generation unites its collective experiences. If a young man falls in love with a young girl, all his peers do too. If this angers his girlfriend, then she becomes a cipher of the ‘angry young woman’. In “Las Multitudes”, Argentinian director and film-maker Federico León has created a catalogue of humanity in miniature form: 13 Argentinian actors and 108 Berliners act out the dynamics within and between the various groups. The interaction runs horizontally as well as vertically through the generations. Everyone is a protagonist for a moment before disappearing back into anonymity. “Las Multitudes” is a search for identity in the area of conflict between the individual and the collective, a rumination on the place of the individual in society. It would be nice, says León, if the audience could remember each of the 121 people at the end.
