The principle is easy. A symphony orchestra practices pop songs, the lyrics scroll across a screen, someone holds a microphone and in the concert hall, the most exhilarating collective concert in a long time unfolds. Whether Robbie Williams or Frank Sinatra, Nena or Deichkind, it’s about standing on stage and being allowed to sing without restraint at the top of your lungs … a mixture of pop concert, party and political movement. A yellowing poster on a bar in Hamburg once claimed: “We believe that social change begins with singing in a choir!” Perhaps. In any case, we guarantee mass euphoria. And if a few dozen visitors slip into the role of Diana Ross or Tina Turner, Lionel Ritchie, Bruce Springsteen or Michael Jackson to perform a spirited rendition of the charity classic “We are the World”, Foreign Affairs 2013 will certainly have ended with a rousing finale.
